August 2022 Neighbor of the Month: Creating Community on Wheels

Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Hi, My name is Tashad, and I also go by Sebastian, which is my stage name when I am DJing in the city. About two years ago my twin brother Rashad and I started a cycling group in Louisville named Bike.Cruise.Brews, or as everyone else refers to it, “BCB,” We meet up all year round on Sundays at Logan Street Market at 11:30 a.m. and leave for a ride at 12:05 p.m. to take riders around the city.

What neighborhood do you live in?

I currently live in Jeffersonville, Indiana, but I was raised in the Smoketown/Shelby Park area. I currently work in Louisville.

What do you love about your neighborhood?

I love the growth of my community. There are so many new businesses that are opening up in the community. During my early years growing up in the neighborhood there were a select few businesses, but it’s great to see the community have so many options now. Many of the businesses are active in the community too, which is great.

How and why did you get involved in your community?

We started “BCB” because we were new to cycling and were riding with some groups around town who weren’t as friendly, or they would leave you behind on the bike rides. So, we wanted to bring something to the city where all riders felt welcome, and something more inclusive. Our rides are for any beginner cyclist, or anyone who wants to enjoy riding any form of wheel around the neighborhood, and you can meet and network with new people.

What have you been working on recently in your neighborhood?

I’ve been working on getting more riders out on Sunday. I’ve been recruiting riders from different neighborhoods to join us. My goal is to have cyclists, skateboarders, roller skaters, or any type of wheel on the rides. Many people tell us they feel safe and protected when they ride with us, and it’s one of the few places they can enjoy riding.

What are your hopes for the future of your neighborhood?

My hope is to continue to inspire my community, and spark the conversation on better street infrastructure and safety in the community for people. I would like to help get a cycLOUvia in the Smoketown/Shelby Park area too.
