July 2022 Neighbor of the Month: Helping Create a Thriving Parkland Community

Our July 2022 Neighbor of the Month is Tamika Jackson of Noir Realty KY and the Parkland Business and Development Association.

Tell us a little bit about yourself

My name is Tamika Jackson. I am a mother of three sons. I am the Principal Broker and Co-Owner of Noir Realty KY, a full-service Real Estate Brokerage that provides residential and commercial sales and consultation, leasing services, property management, and short-term rentals. We have an office in the Parkland Area at the Nia Center. I love working in the real estate profession because we are able to assist so many with finding and locating their next home, place to open their business, and/or investment property.

What have you been working on in your neighborhood?

I have been working with other community partners and associations to promote and create a more viable, sustainable, and thriving Parkland community by sharing our resources and providing opportunities for engagement.

How did you get involved in this work?

Being aware of the challenges of the residents and business owners in the community. Also my attendance at a CFN-hosted Better Block Meeting at Irma Dee’s restaurant and having a voice to make a few suggestions for more engagement. I partnered with Johnique Ison (CFN Senior Liaison) and Tammy Hawkins to start PBDA (Parkland Business and Development Association). Due to my previous investment in the Historic Parkland Corridor and due to my previous personal investment in Historic Parkland Property and several years of experience with managing affordable rental properties in the community, I became very engaged and aware of the challenges and lack of resources of both local residents and the local business owners within the area. I felt that coming together collectively and sharing resources and bringing speakers and government (city representation) in to hear our concerns, could bring and/or influence reinvestment and/or support for us.

What do you love about your neighborhood?

I love much of the landscape of the 28th Street Corridor and the architecture of some of the historic buildings between Virginia and Dumesnil, and the surrounding homes in the Parkland community. I get inspired by knowing the fact that I am standing behind paths that were imprinted by influential and promising African American (Black) individuals that were rooted and/or invested in Parkland such as Muhammad Ali, George Stovall, and Eleanor Jordan.

What are your hopes for your neighborhood in the future?

I hope for a more viable, thriving, Parkland Community that is growing once again with more diverse shops including retail and various small restaurants and venue businesses that community residents can walk to and that are also patronized by others in surrounding local communities. I would also love to see an increase in the percentage of home ownership for local individuals and families.
